SCENE OPENS on Maya (Chanel Preston) and her daughter Kali (Alison Rey) sitting on the bed in Kali's bedroom. Maya brushes Kali's hair, admiring her. Kali looks like a doll and the atmosphere is unsettling. Maya announces that she has a date. Kali is surprised, then worried. She tries to hide it, but doesn't do it well, commenting that her mother never told her she was interested in anyone... Kali looks hurt, betrayed, as if she really believes they tell each other everything. Kali then asks her mother how she can even CONSIDER dating after her father died and Maya's mood darkens. She gets angry at Kali, insisting that Kali should behave herself, she's only 18, far too young to know what's best for the family. Maya's grip on Kali's shoulder tightens as she becomes angrier. Kali flinches at the harshness of her mother's grip and sudden anger. Maya quickly pushes her anger aside and compensates by being overly gentle. She pulls Kali into a tight hug and apologizes. Kali is a little nervous as Maya puts a bow in her hair. The doorbell rings and Maya smiles.
